Copied into the family recipe notebook with a note that it makes two loaves — one to keep and one to give away. Grandma's poppy seed bread with its sweet orange glaze was always the first thing to disappear at a potluck.
Bread
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup oil
- 2+ cups sugar
- 1½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp baking powder
- 3 cups flour
- 1½ cups milk
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ½ tsp almond extract
- 1½ tsp butter flavoring
- 2 tbsp poppy seeds
Glaze
- ¼ cup OJ concentrate
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ tsp butter flavoring
- ½ tsp almond extract
- ½ tsp vanilla
Instructions
- Beat eggs, oil, and sugar together.
- Alternately add milk and dry ingredients, mixing well.
- Stir in extracts and poppy seeds.
- Pour into 2 greased loaf pans.
- Bake at 350°F until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Combine glaze ingredients and pour over warm bread while still in the pans.
