Written in Grandma's careful hand in the family recipe notebook, this white bread recipe made the whole house smell like home. She always had a few loaves cooling on the counter, and they never lasted long.
Ingredients
- 4 cups milk, scalded
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 4 tbsp yeast
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp salt
- 1/2 cup margarine or butter
- 4 eggs, well beaten
- 12 cups flour
Instructions
- Scald milk.
- Dissolve yeast in warm water.
- Combine milk, sugar, salt, and margarine. Cool to lukewarm.
- Add eggs and yeast.
- Gradually add flour, about 3 cups at a time.
- Knead until smooth.
- Let rise, punch down, and shape into loaves.
- Bake at 375°F until hollow when tapped.
