Written out in full detail in the family recipe notebook, Grandma's from-scratch chocolate pudding was rich, silky, and miles better than anything from a box. She always made extra because one batch was never enough.
Ingredients
- 1¼ cups sugar
- ¼ cup cocoa
- ½ cup flour (or ¼ cup corn starch)
- ¼ tsp salt
- 3 cups milk
- 4 egg yolks
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1½ tsp vanilla
- ⅔ cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Combine sugar, cocoa, flour, and salt in a saucepan.
- Stir in milk.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly.
- Reduce heat and cook 2 minutes more.
- Beat egg yolks, then temper with a small amount of the hot mixture.
- Pour egg mixture back into the pan and cook 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat. Stir in butter, vanilla, and chocolate chips until smooth.
- Pour into dishes and chill.
